Indexing Your Own Site ("Local Indexing")
If your site is large, a genuinely interested user will want to search
it once he is there and sees its quality. This means you will have to
arrange for the "Search Our Site" page. The advantage of having your
own search engine database, on your own site, is that the database
contains only your pages, and so the user will never be tempted to go
elsewhere. Also, you have total control over the look and feel of
both the search page, and the search results pages. The visitor
then gets an experience unique to your site.
Here is what you need to get set up:
Indexing Software
You will need to install search
engine software on your site to index the pages. The best software to use
is Excerpt® from
Alma Mater Software.
You will need to download and install the
software on your site, and build your search database. After that,
customize your search form and put a link to the search form on your
home page. That's it!.
Example
Check out how
Voyager Company has integrated the search page into their site.
