Do It Yourself: The "Submit URL" expedition
Now that there are now hundreds of search engines available,
sites such as submit-it.com
will attempt to register your information with all of them.
However, the fact remains that a small handfull of search engines
account for the vast majority of the searches, and so it a good idea
to submit your information directly to those sites, in a way that is
tailored to each of them. We have assembled a page with links to the "submit URL" forms for the major
sites. But you have some work to do, first.
Sure you can try one of the many submit
services, but don't rely on them exclusively.
The Brief Description
It is essential that you have a very descriptive and brief (30 words)
description of exactly what your site is. I spent an hour coming up
with mine. Use this same description on the all search sites that ask
for one, so Web surfers will see a consistent image, and know you have
been thoughtful about it.
Be sure to say what it is about your site that makes it
different from others. The Web is a crowded place.
Post to comp.infosystems.www.announce
A Usenet group exists just for announcing Web site. Post your
description there (remember - it must differentiate you!). Read the
newsgroup's
charter first, to see if this newsgroup is an appropriate forum
for you announcement.
